Ladies in Lavender is the little unappreciated gem Different Drummer has been promising you. If you think story telling is all about plot, you will be disappointed, like most of the assorted critics that damned it with faint praise. But if you want to see the human heart revealed in its infinite complexity, run don’t walk to watch this classic.
Harrison Ford is at his best in this 1985 thriller about a no nonsense detective trying to save himself and an 8-year-old Amish witness to a murder. The performance earned the actor his sole Oscar nomination in a “surprisingly emotive and sympathetic performance.”
He’s not your father’s sleuthing cleric. Vicar Sidney Chambers is a scotch drinking smoker who loves jazz and is not unappreciative of the ladies. He‘s as human and tempted as the flock he leads, and he struggles to do the right thing as much as they do. And did I mention he is gorgeous, with a smile as melting as his earnest blue eyes?
Behind the well-manicured lawns, the polished silver, and the delicate china is an invisible wall. And it’s one the maids in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, know not to cross. While the more violent street confrontations of the civil rights movement are played out on the street, the small private battles inside everyday kitchens are just as intense.
