Clearly not for the squeamish, this “Western” takes place in the Australian outback, where the harsh landscape is as unforgiving as the raw assortment of humans who claim it. But this stark saga transcends genre as it unmasks the complexity of evil, and in so doing, is right up there with Shakespeare, Milton, and Melville.
It’s probably worth watching for the car chase alone, not to mention the dreamy love story, and some solid detective work spiced up with a little Sci Fi. In fact, there’s almost enough there to keep you from thinking too much about a plot that ultimately blows away like dust in the wind.
It teases, taunts, and tantalizes us with a fabulous array of food porn, but Chef is so much more. Like its signature Cubano sandwich each ingredient is fresh and piquant, and the same authenticity and passion permeate every aspect of this most delightful film.
Despite its title, this character-driven crime drama packs its menace in quiet conversations, camel’s hair coats, and the kind of self-control only known to an alpha male.
He’s no longer the writer, director, or the leading man, but Sylvester “Rocky” Stallone is very much the star of Creed.
