Harrison Ford is at his best in this 1985 thriller about a no nonsense detective trying to save himself and an 8-year-old Amish witness to a murder. The performance earned the actor his sole Oscar nomination in a “surprisingly emotive and sympathetic performance.”
The title says it all. Finally, some overdue respect for the iconic sleuth. And it's about time. He is 93 years old in this latest Holmes saga.
Netflix’s Shetland has it all. The stark beauty of the grand cliffs looming over the plunging North Sea, a lilting Scottish brogue that washes over you in soft waves, and a compelling lead who is a great detective and overall lovely man, too. No ponies yet, but we can hope.
Attention, anyone who loves mysteries, history, World War II settings, English villages, and consummate acting. I have the series for you. Or rather Netflix does, all 28 of these hour and a half gems available through streaming or on DVDs.
Father Brown is more concerned with saving souls than solving mysteries, but he’s pretty darn good at each. The BBC series, like his reassuring presence, is as comforting as a cup of tea and a warm fireside, even if an alarming number of corpses litter the idyllic English countryside.
