Plaudits for some risky social satire and a few pokes at humorless PC armor, but none for its lazy reliance on safe targets and vulgarity rather than wit. What’s more, beneath its obvious goring of bias and prejudice, the film reveals its own.
Just Like Heaven is a pastry puff of a film complete with a plucky heroine, lovingly flawed sidekicks, and that wonderful almost too late awakening when the sweetly obtuse hero finally realizes he is in the full throws of love. It’s enough to make you believe in fate, true love, and happy endings all over again.
This is the thinking man’s vigilante film, peppered with artsy NPR radio monologue as well as quotes by D. H. Lawrence and Emily Dickinson. But there’s plenty of badass, too, and Jodie Foster wears her compulsive vengeance like second skin, blowing away bad guys with a driven lethal fury as cold as it is addictive.
Spider-Man still careens from New York’s skyscrapers with audacious grace, but the grounded Peter Parker embraces his newfound fame with less ease. Even before the gooey black meteor gel brings out his dark side, we see Peter heading that way on his own. Let’s face it-- a steady diet of glory is a bit rich for Geeks.
A for atmosphere and acting, but C for a plot that is as contrived as it is confusing. The notorious and grotesque Black Dahlia murder flashes before us in bits and pieces – excuse the pun – but it is really no more than a backdrop for the cloud of lust and loyalty, duty and obsession that swirls around the interlocking lives of two LAPD detectives and their best gal in the film noir forties.
