It’s hard to turn down this second helping of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. It overflows with talent, good will, and an effervescent joy of life like a glass of champagne filled to the brim.
I liked the book better than the movie. The Bible’s story of Moses leading his people to freedom is much more compelling than Ridley Scott’s cinematic version. But what can you expect when a self-acknowledged atheist with little sympathy for the religious storyline is the director?
James Bond darkened, diminished, and deconstructed. Out: the suave spy who saves the world without putting a wrinkle in his elegant tux, all the while not spilling a drop of his vodka martini, the one who puts a bullet in the arch villain and then finishes him off with a killer quip. In: A dour 007 who sloshes down Heinekens suited up in his shiny best like a punk rocker out on the town. And he can’t save the world, let alone the single person he’s guarding.
This classic 1987 offbeat Mamet vehicle is more like a game of chess than a film, where you are guaranteed a series of astonishing moves and counter moves. Our queen is a beautiful psychotherapist, aloof and repressed as only an analyst could be, and our knight a charming con man, one who sees deeper into her soul than she suspects.
This taut thriller has plenty of intrigue and action, but something a bit foreign to the genre – an almost philosophical exploration of the two sides on the War on Terror. And yes, it is co-written by Steve Martin, that “wild and crazy guy” who proves that his comic genius is founded upon a true cerebral nature.
