I think it is time to give this 2001 World War II film a second look even though the critics and general public were not so impressed with it when it came out. Cate Blanchett is marvelous in the title role as a Scottish girl working with the French Resistance in Vichy France, giving us a woman’s perspective on that hellish time and place.
The neurotic New Yorker deconstructs Tennessee Williams. Woody Allen also dishes the dirt on Bernie Madoff – who apparently lost the director a few cool million – in this overrated homage to dysfunctional narcissists, Woody Allen himself being the chief among them.
If you want to read another gushing review of this space thriller, go somewhere else. Yes, it is a technical triumph, but the tail is wagging the dog here. What about a story featuring characters we genuinely care about?
Hoffman in the title role in this 2012 film is equally complex and flawed. He is unctuous and soothing, his honey tongue almost hypnotic. Full of himself as well as bonhomie, he turns taciturn and peevish when his methods are questioned.
While it purports to recap the notorious FBI ABSCAM sting of the late 70s, what American Hustle really mirrors is Hollywood itself – its self-obsession, crass showmanship and vulgar superficiality. But the talent overflows as well, so we can’t help ourselves from having as good a time as the entire cast seems to be doing.
