Over-stylized and artificial, the tail wags the dog in this pretentious reinvention of this Russian classic. Tolstoy’s story of the “doomed love affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna and the dashing officer, Count Vronsky” should have been enough to carry the film.
For 50 years Philomena has kept the secret. Now she wonders what has happened to the son she was forced to give up for adoption. It’s a heart-wrenching true story, one that could easily turn sentimental, maudlin, or preachy. But Judi Dench does not allow that to happen.
Most all the pieces are on the chessboard – the exotic locales, breath-taking car chases, M, Moneypenney, Q, and a Bond girl or 2. But – dare I say it – they seem hollowed out, empty vessels without substance, spark, or soul.
Emily Blunt in the title role keeps this mystery from going off the rails with a compelling and credible performance. Sadly, the same cannot be said for her supporting cast, though it’s the script rather than their acting that is at fault.
It’s slick, sexy, and a little sick. Not to mention superficial. Hitchcock’s icy blond sexed up and deconstructed with no sign of a Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant to come to the rescue.
