It is low key and in German with subtitles. No thrilling car chases, sex, or profanity. But the way this film deals with the issues of identity, betrayal, and obsession grabs you in a way that haunts and holds on like no other.
This taut French thriller is fast paced and well crafted with a plot that evolves out of rather than around its eclectic cast of characters. Unlike too many recent films that depend upon torturous twists that end up in a tangle, this yarn yields a skein than runs smooth and true.
Like a talented chef creating a dish from someone’s leftovers, Spike Lee takes the stale ingredients of a bank heist and cooks up something surprisingly fresh. It’s not cops and robbers so much as psychological warfare, and with the likes of Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, and Clive Owen playing the mind games, who wouldn’t want a front row seat?
By scale alone, this 2009 disaster film outdoes itself. Never have buildings crumbled with such panache, icons tumbled into the sea with greater style, the earth scorched, torn asunder, and split with more symbolic dread. And yet, against all odds, some do survive.
Oh, what wonders and delights the summer of 2014 has offered. In what I could have titled “Eating My way through Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and then Back to the Texas Hill Country,” I was in for great expectations fulfilled as well as piquant culinary surprises.
