Back to the future. It’s as if Mel Gibson has distilled all the rebellious rage of his entire film career into one dark and potent brew, and then downed it in one gulp. The hard-hitting revenge tale does not disappoint. It is crisp, brutal, and at times, even tender.
Johnny Depp shines in his portrayal of romanticized bank robber John Dillinger, his smile just as disarming as his tommy gun. And the midnight shootout in the hush woods of Wisconsin evokes some fond memories of Midwest Fourth of July fireworks. But the rest is rather lackluster, with a script that paints some of the most colorful thugs of the era with the gray tones of a Sunday obituary for the local dentist.
Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette MTV style is a superficial spectacle that seems strangely seduced by the excesses it portrays. The giddy camera gives us plenty of eye candy – gorgeous gowns, sparkling champagne, and iced delicacies, but seems to forget what film making is all about -- the art of telling a story.
Don’t let cranky critics scare you away from this fairly pleasant diversion. Expect to be awed by the beauty of Rome – the gilded inner courts of the Vatican, the magnificent fountains, the centuries old marble statues still guarding this ancient city -- all of which stand up considerably better than the over-stretched plot.
Here’s a film you probably never heard of and wouldn’t go see on your own. I have, and my advice to you is to stay home and leave it that way.
