Mark Twain goes Korean in this Asian version of The Prince and the Pauper. It’s a delicious stir-fry of elegant ritual spiced up with palace intrigue and bawdy humor. But there’s a lot heart here, too, largely construed through the superb acting gifts of its star in a dual role, playing the both king and his commoner double.
For Alice it was the rabbit hole, and Dorothy, the tornado. Now it’s time to follow young Lucy Pevensie through another portal, from the dark recesses of an ancient wardrobe into a pristine winter wonderland filled with talking beasts and the mythological creatures of antiquity. But beyond the peaceful panoply of snow is the crystal palace of the dreaded white witch, whose matter-of-fact malevolence knows no bounds.
No wonder everyone is fired up over this latest “page to production” release. What burned off the pages in the second of The Hunger Games trilogy ignites on screen with futuristic/gladiator age battle scenes and slow burning rage against the totalitarian machine.
This 2009 offering has just enough hints that it will transcend the inanities of the current horror genre to disappoint viewers thinking they will get more than the typical allotment of grisly clichés and contrived plot twists. But it certainly lives up to its diabolical title.
