Okay, it’s not another Sixth Sense, but M. Night Shyamalan’s latest venture is pretty decent. Certainly much better than the trailer, which doesn’t do it justice.
It’s billed as a “stand alone” Star Wars movie, but Rogue One really isn’t. It “stands on the shoulders of the giants” that have gone before it.
Luke Skywalker meets Sherlock Holmes, or maybe better yet, Dr. House. The latest Marvel rollout is a sparkling package of fast-paced adventure that never stops for a breath. It doesn’t so much introduce its titular hero as propel him toward us like a fastball careening through time and space.
This epic film is a study in contrasts – sartorial splendor versus junkie dishabille, pandemic corruption at war with lonely integrity, and high-minded words interspersed with gut-wrenching deeds. Denzel Washington charms us as the suave villain and Russell Crowe effortlessly dons the skin of the dogged cop out to get him.
He’s the workingman’s James Bond. A loner in a T-shirt and jeans instead of a tux. Jack Reacher wouldn’t know a Cabernet from a cognac, and I’d guess he probably drinks his beer straight from the bottle. And no, the ex army major is not licensed to kill, but he is every bit as lethal as 007.
