It’s dark and dirty on the docks in Hoboken, New Jersey, a jungle of crime and corruption. Squeal and you’ll have a convenient “accident,” the longshoremen unloading your carcass with the same muscled efficiency they use to ply their trade.
Harrison Ford is at his best in this 1985 thriller about a no nonsense detective trying to save himself and an 8-year-old Amish witness to a murder. The performance earned the actor his sole Oscar nomination in a “surprisingly emotive and sympathetic performance.”
Daniel Day-Lewis brings a very human dimension to his iconic portrait of Lincoln. He is a tender, and perhaps even an indulgent father, a long suffering husband contending with a neurotic wife, and still a willful and wily politician using all the tricks to achieve a noble purpose.
Though I can’t quite echo the hyperbolic praise lavished on this film, it is, nevertheless, a superb character study that is powerful, well crafted, and subtle. The amoral misanthrope at its center is complex, yet as elemental as the harsh landscape that cradles his beloved black gold.
Another undiscovered gem to watch at home on your big screen. And it’s free on Amazon Prime streaming. Not only will you enjoy this true story about a poor Chinese boy who becomes an international ballet dancer, but you will find a new respect for the art itself.
