Clearly not for the squeamish, this “Western” takes place in the Australian outback, where the harsh landscape is as unforgiving as the raw assortment of humans who claim it. But this stark saga transcends genre as it unmasks the complexity of evil, and in so doing, is right up there with Shakespeare, Milton, and Melville.
What does it say about a society that depends on a wheezy 80-year-old to clean up its streets? Michael Caine takes us where we’d rather not go in his portrayal of a reluctant vigilante trying to catch the bad guys as well as his ragged breath.
It’s probably worth watching for the car chase alone, not to mention the dreamy love story, and some solid detective work spiced up with a little Sci Fi. In fact, there’s almost enough there to keep you from thinking too much about a plot that ultimately blows away like dust in the wind.
Like Babette’s actual epicurean dinner, the film about it is prepared with a deft hand. It is as subtle as the French caviar, as rich as the turtle soup, and as ephemeral as the bubbles in the exquisite Veuve Clicquot Champagne.
It teases, taunts, and tantalizes us with a fabulous array of food porn, but Chef is so much more. Like its signature Cubano sandwich each ingredient is fresh and piquant, and the same authenticity and passion permeate every aspect of this most delightful film.
