Plaudits for some risky social satire and a few pokes at humorless PC armor, but none for its lazy reliance on safe targets and vulgarity rather than wit. What’s more, beneath its obvious goring of bias and prejudice, the film reveals its own.
If you delight in the casual cruelties of a dysfunctional relationship or cannot wait to peep under the veneer of Parisian sophistication or the chic Manhattan version thereof, then you will probably relish this modern comedy of manners that manages to be an equal opportunity offender in skewering both French and American mores.
Just Like Heaven is a pastry puff of a film complete with a plucky heroine, lovingly flawed sidekicks, and that wonderful almost too late awakening when the sweetly obtuse hero finally realizes he is in the full throws of love. It’s enough to make you believe in fate, true love, and happy endings all over again.
